About The Author
My name is FaleautÅ Simi Maua Taua BA LLB PhD(hc).
I work most days of the year to educate fellow Samoan citizens about the Land Titles Registration Act 2008 and the way it alienates us from our customary land.
The Samoan constitution states that customary land should be owned in perpetuity by all members of an aiga. However, the HRPP introduced a system of land ownership, called the Torrens system, which contradicts this. This change violates the constitution.
This was done without the knowledge or consent of parliament or the Samoan electorate. Here I have gathered the proof, so that all interested parties present or future can educate themselves and contribute their own energy to preserve Samoans' right to their (our) own land.
I implore anyone reading this to do what they can to contribute to raising awareness and speaking up about the alienation of Samoan customary land. Without your energy, without your commitment, we will lose everything. Our fanua, our mamalu, and our aganu'u. It could die in your lifetime. Do what you can.
